List of recommended Rurouni Kenshin fanfics is here.

PS. For those that aren't on Tumblr: I saw "Frozen" and loved it. I'm trying to convince my sister to come with me to see it because a.) she'd like it and b.) uhm I wanna see it again.

I lied. Today's post brought to you by this:

If you dig far enough back into the RK fandom I find half the fucking people I'm still friends with lurking around--old reviews, old fics, old comments; old stories on other people's favorites lists.

And then I find my old reviews, which, as I have proved to others, now, were fucking embarrassing as all getout. I maintain that I must have been living on a diet of Skittles and More Skittles at that time in my life. There is no other explanation. (And tea. I drank a lot of tea back then.)

an oldie but a goodie

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/1507072/1/Sound-of-Snow-Falling

definitely one of the better aoshi/misao 'fics i've read. pretty short. trigger: miscarriage. it's not your typical story regarding them or their relationship, but damn. it's very well written.

I'll never shut up about RK so feel free to ignore this.

Finally I have found an A/M author that writes Misao the way I imagine her--at least when it comes to this one particular thing. There's this silly trope in the fandom about Misao trying to look pretty for her Aoshi-sama and that's fine, but every time she does it so eagerly! Or even grudgingly! But she always is sure he's going to like what he sees. This one story I'm reading, though, highlights her doubts and, I think, fears, of dressing up for him: maybe he'll think she looks like a little kid trying on her mother's kimono, she'll look like she's trying too hard, or it'll just look too weird because she never dresses that way. Or maybe he'll like her that way better which is almost worse.

I can really appreciate Misao being written in a way that makes more sense in regards to her character. She's peppy, but let's be real: everyone steps all over her feelings all the time and she's better at pretending things don't bother her that do, but shit bothers her. She cries when Kenshin promises to bring Aoshi back and she cries for Kaoru, too. So (general) you can't tell me that she doesn't have doubts about herself: her abilities, her looks, her feelings, et cetera.

(COMING UP NEXT: a rant on episode #89 of the anime series!)

So this Medieval lit class is kicking my ass. I'm two full weeks of reading behind because financial aid was slow and my book took almost two full weeks just to ship to me, and I just... There is no conceivable way of catching up with all of the OTHER writing & reading I have to do for classes. I'm considering dropping it, but that would put me at 3/4 time instead of full time.

I've already paid for the class. My brother says his friend dropped after the refund dates (and went below full-time) and didn't have a problem but I'll have to call the college to make sure it won't be a problem on Monday. ><

If it won't cause issues, I'm dropping that class like a hot potato. I only paid maybe $10 for all three books so I'm not worried about that. There are so many footnotes and I'm already a slow reader (I used to be a speed reader, but I just CAN'T read quickly anymore; I've found that the older I get the slower I read, and if I don't read slowly I can't absorb information to remember later).

Brothers are at GameJam this weekend. Nice and quiet. :P

Myaru's entry kind of makes me feel bad about not posting here as much as I used to. I kind of miss this site, since I know it's more conducive to discussion than Tumblr. Sadly, I also know most of you have gone to Tumblr!

Lately I have had quite a few FE thoughts, but mostly concerning FE13. P: And I always hesitate to post FE7/8/9/10 (whatever) thoughts because I'm generally sure that people are sick of seeing those; they tend to be the same or similar to things I've posted in the past.

I usually discuss writing ideas with Kender as it is, so that leaves...what? for this journal? Meta? Random blatherings about the various fandoms I'm in? I'm not sure. I should rewrite my Rose of Versailles thoughts and post them here, though; they were disjointed when I put them on Tumblr. P:

Hmm. (I totally forget all my tags here.)

I've actually decided not to go on the dig. As much fun as it would be I really should concentrate on things that matter for my major since I'm already behind on everything and will continue to be behind due to the ASL classes already filling up. Bleh.

Maybe next year?

Exciting news!

Tim found a job. :D They hired him on the second interview and he hasn't even graduated yet. The best part? His record (felony) didn't matter at all. They were very understanding about it and said most of the men working for the company were ex-military and divorced and understood the situation and they were glad he was up-front and honest about it. Tim is super pumped about it and Wendy naturally is, too. He starts at $50k which is pretty good considering he hasn't even graduated yet--and won't until after spring semester.

But wait! THAT'S NOT ALL.

They were giving Tim a tour of the facilities and they have a manufacturing area they're working on. Tim asked if they were hiring people for those positions, too, and they said yes. So Tim mentioned that his father-in-law (my dad, though Tim thinks he might have accidentally said stepfather, lmao) was looking for work and they told him to have my dad apply there--just to make sure Tim's name was on the resume also.

My dad's been unemployed since January when Parker laid off a whole shift, so this is très exciting weeee.

BUT WAIT THAT'S NOT ALL.

Tim's parents want to switch cars with Tim & Wendy. They have a really nice new(er) CR-V and a, hrm, Jetta? And they are doing this because Wendy and Tim's CR-V is an old piece of crap basically, and they want to ensure that Tim doesn't have any problems with his new job. (Like the car breaking down. The company said their biggest issue with hiring kids right out of college is...they...are always...late.)

So I'm very excited for Tim getting this job, and very excited also that maybe this will enable my dad to get a job, too.

I typed more than this but they're working on the power lines and the power went out and I forget what I was saying. Hah.

FE Exchange is going to be held on Tumblr this year, but other sites can participate, too.

Here's a link: http://antiquecarousel.tumblr.com/post/66194130614

If you want to pimp it out, feel free. There are changes to the rules so please, you know, read them. ;)

Most importantly: don't message me here about it. Email. I definitely won't be trying to coordinate this on ten different sites. Email is just EASIER.

Hey homeskillets:

After classes and work today I'm heading straight to VA to visit [personal profile] kender for the weekend. Wish me luck and say a prayer because I got three hours of sleep and it's going to be a stressful day before I get off at 6pm to begin my drive.

this was posted on tumblr so feel free to skip over it:

Have you ever edited a story that was 250,000 words long? For the first time? Oh my God. I’m the worst at editing in the world. It’s a good thing Kender’s around to keep me in check because I keep forgetting to go back and edit my parts.

Below is crap about RPing fanfic out through email. Oh and Kender and I wrote a 76,000 word story in eight days. BOOYAH.

(For those out of the loop, Kender and I have co-authored like a million things and by a million I mean nine, but it’s over 700,000 words of fanfic between us. Nothing’s posted yet. We’re uhm…editing.)

The fact that we semi-regularly (all year) have been writing stories 40,000-70,000 words long is hysterical. The advantage to this “RP"/coauthoring thing is that it keeps us both writing. I could argue that we would be writing separately if not together, but that’s not true.

Our process is something like this:

1. We “take turns" picking a plot/beginning scene/whatever, write it up in the POV of our main character, send it to the other person.

2. Other person responds with the second character.

3. This goes back and forth until the story is done, with us picking up other characters who appear. Sometimes we switch, so for some RPs I did Farina, and for others Kender did Farina. In the one we did where almost the entire cast of FE7 was present, we had to pick characters in advance and points of view for scenes, and plot it all out.

Anyway, it’s fun. I could respond to RP/fic emails in between classes, or even during class if I was super sneaky. She can even reply on her phone. It’s been really nice.

Sometimes we have long scenes. I know I’ve written some that were 1,600-2,500 words long, so basically a one-shot all on their own, but it’s seriously a lot of fun to do this with someone else. It keeps the story fresh and interesting (because in RP you can’t always predict how another character will react to what yours does) and it requires a little teamwork and snatches of free time.

I know when I sit down to write actual fanfiction, on my own, I need a block of about six hours (even if I know it’ll only take me two to write what I need to; I have to know I have TONS of time) and perfect peace and quiet. For RP-email ‘ficcing? I don’t quite need that.

So with our first RP, we slapped it up onto Google Docs in ten parts and started editing scenes. (Part 10/10 editing begins now; this has taken forever. The best part? We still don’t have a title. Dang we’re good.) Because our first RP was written in sloppy both-points-of-view with overlapping parts, we had to cut back and make each scene from just one character’s point of view (instead of letting it be completely omniscient) so it’s been a ton of work. But man it was fun to write.

The RP/fic that we just finished today? 76,000 words. We started it on July 25th. It was a ‘fic I intended to write for the final conclusion to my novelization—which WE ALL KNOW WILL NEVER GET WRITTEN ANYWAY. 8-9 days to write 76,000 words.

WE. ARE. AWESOME.

I mean, I know it sounds silly, but it’s just so much more fun than sitting alone to write for hours. Sometimes. Regarding certain things. RPing out fanfic for some ideas is way easier than forcing yourself to get excited about it alone. When you don’t know how other characters are going to react exactly to what someone says, it leaves this element of suspense to the story that makes it so it might turn out differently than you had planned, but the advantage is that you don’t ever feel like you’re forcing characters into roles or situations that they probably wouldn’t get themselves into.

And the amazing amount of miscommunication is perfect. It feels real when Hector says X, and in a fanfic Farina would know he meant Y by saying X, because you’ve probably planned that and you’re one person thinking with our own mind, but in an RP she might actually think he meant Z by saying X. The person playing her might read what you say and decide immediately that it doesn’t sound like what you meant it to sound like when you wrote it. (Kind of like…real life.)

Basically: I fucking love this. It’s awesome. It’s so much fun. It gives me something to look forward to most days.

And Kender is probably getting sick of it BUT TOO BAD. /noogies her and flees.

The unfortunate thing is that to turn these into fanfics, there is some serious editing that has to be done. I still feel it’s worth it. ;)

Too bad I suck at editing.

When these are done they’ll be posted here.

#blamekender

Here are the stories we’ve written in order:

#1: Hector/Farina* (started out with no plot, ended up super long and involved; farina and hector basically make a lot of bets with one another)
#2: Hector/Farina (friends-with-benefits)
#3: Hector/Farina (farina shows up out of nowhere and starts flirting madly for “no reason")
#4: AU Hector/Farina* (hector meets farina by running into her at all three of her jobs; deals with endometriosis)
#5: Hector/Farina (trust issues/scared of sex/getting married just so that hector won’t have to marry a stranger)
#6: Kent/Lyn, Hector/Farina, Sain/Fiora, Eliwood/Ninian, Erk/Priscilla, Serra/Oswin, others (pretty much a massive blanket scenario type fanfic but not as weird as it sounds)
#7: Kent/Lyndis (lyn decides she’s going to do what it takes to get kent to notice her. pretty much as bad as it sounds but not written as bad as it probably sounds)
#8: Hector/Farina, Oswin/Serra (farina comes to hector looking for work that is safe, but she kind of can’t do it)
#9: Kent/Lyn, Sain/Fiora, Hector/Farina, Wil+Florina (Lyn goes back to rule Caelin after Negal’s defeat, does a terrible job, and is Hausen’d (aka poisoned))
* = our best efforts

WHAT WILL NUMBER TEN BE?????????? who knows. It’s my turn to pick, and I’m in love with Kender’s Kent—she’s so good at writing him it makes me jealous. I’m considering an AU.

But uhm…I need to edit… Yeah. >_> TO GOOGLE DOCS!!!!!
